Family Field Notes

A game where everyone stays in

One soft ball, a shared goal, and no elimination. Try this simple family game, then let your child change it.

A smiling child in a blue Soccer Stars shirt raises both arms outdoors.

The ball rolls past. Nobody is out. You bring it back and keep playing.

Try making that the rule for a few minutes of family play. Instead of choosing a winner, give everyone the same small mission.

Start with one gate

Choose a soft ball that suits your child and a clear, level space. An adult should stay involved and adjust the setup to the child and surroundings.

Place two cushions far enough apart for the ball to pass between them. Sit on opposite sides of the gate and roll the ball through to each other. Your shared mission: send it there and back.

If the ball misses, retrieve it and try again. Bring the cushions farther apart or sit closer if you want to change the challenge. There is no score to protect and no one waiting to be let back in.

Let your child change one thing

Ask, “What should our game become?”

The gate could be the entrance to a pretend animal home, and the ball could be a delivery. Or your child could invent a name for each pass. Keep the space clear and the changes simple enough for everyone to join.

Offer a choice if an open question feels too big: “Should we move the gate closer, or make it wider?” Playing the same way again is a choice, too.

Finish when you are ready

You do not need a winning round to finish. Agree on one last delivery, put the ball away together, and leave the game available for another day.

These are at-home ideas to adapt, not a lesson from a particular MHK course. They reflect something we care about at Mile High Kids Collective: fun comes first, and play can be noncompetitive.
